Will the West do anything about the Russian invasion of Georgia? Russian troops have already pushed past South Ossetia, giving the lie to claims that the attack was only a response intended to help rebels there. President Bush appears to be MIA, claiming to have been “firm” with Vladimir Putin over the attack.
Zbigniew Brzezinski has an interview at the Huff Po on what a concerted response to Putin’s adventures might look like.
UPDATE- C. J. Chivers writes analysis today of the Georgian military buildup and the U.S. role in Georgia’s confrontation with Russia. Good background.
UPDATE 2- The Georgian sense of betrayal is beginning to run deep, as many realize no help is on the way from the U.S. leader who encouraged and armed them. George W. Bush played a hand in emboldening the young democracy with a sense that it would somehow be supported against a huge Russian army on its border. As it is now clear that the Georgians misunderstood him, it will be hard for Bush to be credible speaking against the Russian invasion and adventurism.
