Feingold Fights for Our Civil Liberties and Against the Patriot Act

Jeralyn is pointing out some of the ways Senator Feingold puts the rest of his party to shame. First, he’s the only Senator to stand up to Alberto Gonzales and call a lie a lie regarding the Attorney General’s confirmation testimony and his NSA wiretap testimony.

Now, Gonzales is issuing a “clarification” of his recent testimony, which indicates that the domestic spying the administration is engaged in is more pervasive than he let on in his testimony.

Then, Feingold got way out in front of other Democrats on the USA Patriot Act:

"If Democrats can't stand up on something like this when the president's poll numbers are 34 percent, I just wonder how much right we have to govern this country," Feingold said in an interview Tuesday. "You've got to show people you believe in something, not just that you're gaming the issues."

Feingold is now the only Senate opponent to renewing the Patriot Act.

If Paul Wellstone were alive to see this, he’d have some choice words for fellow Democrats and some serious backup for Feingold’s principled stands.
