« Barack on Super Tuesday | Main | Obama's Delegate Lead »

The Race After Super-Duper Tuesday

The early totals looked pro-Clinton, but as the night wore on, Obama’s numbers rose, especially in cities and in the Midwest and West. By this morning, the race for the Democratic nomination looks extremely tight, with about a hundred delegates separating the two Dems and the popular vote very close.

With 2,025 delegates needed to win at the convention,

Clinton has 825 Obama has 847

Obama has 732 Clinton has 834

Several interesting breakdowns came out of the exit polling:

Asian and Hispanic voters broke heavily for Clinton:

Asian 68% to 30% Clinton

Hispanic 61% to 37% Clinton

White voters broke for Clinton:

Whites 52% to 43%

African American voters backed Obama in huge numbers:

African-American 82% to 16% Obama

Independents broke for Obama by 21%

College Educated voters broke for Obama:

College Educated 54% to 42% Obama

This is going to be a horse-race into the spring. Wow, who would have imagined Super Duper Tuesday would bring us a real race for the nomination? It’ll be important to see how the two stand up to what will likely be a small preview of how low the general election campaign will go, especially as the right gears up against their most hated woman or an African American seeking change from the politics of the past. As tired as these two candidates are now, what’s coming next is just a tune-up.
