A few things struck me tonight watching (and listening to, early on, on my way home on a portable radio) the SOTU speech President Bush delivered to the nation:
- The unmitigated gall with which the President turned what should be grounds for impeachment, his illegal eavesdropping on huge numbers of American citizens without judicial oversight, into a cudgel to beat his opponents with. He lied about the focus of the spying and pretended that it was only Al Qaeda members who were listened in on and that his secret data mining program was actually used by previous Administrations.
- He practically ignored the destruction of the American city of New Orleans— a failure that should be considered a shame and a stain on the reputation of the country.
- He actually signed autographs for his devoted minions on the way out of the chamber, while Democrats avoided the President like the plague.
- He’s gotta be the first President to be cheered for failing (on Social Security) in a major initiative.
